Things To Do in Carlsbad & San Diego

Carlsbad

Thank you for booking to stay at your vacation home, Carlsbad beach Condo.  Here are a few items your family might be interested in planning for activities during your stay.

San Diego is a diverse metro area with lots of brand name attractions you might like to visit.  Many of these are all day, busy excursions. There are few local gems.  Short trips, within a few minutes’ drive.  These ideas represent a simple, stimulating morning or afternoon excursion.  Leaving plenty of time to relax, vacation and enjoy the beach.   Of course the Beach is the #1 attraction.  Look up “The stingray shuffle” and first aide.

ALL YEAR LONG:

A. Attractions:

      1. Walk the City Tours https://www.walkthecitytours.com If you are in and out of Carlsbad; this might not have a big appeal.  If you come to Carlsbad often, have family here or some connection at all; This is a really great walking tour with a fantastic interesting guide. This is a half mile away, also a short easy and local history tour.
      2. The Carlsbad aquafarm is quite a novel and tasty tour. https://carlsbadaquafarm.com/  in the busy seasons its quite booked so plan ahead.  Aside the tour, you can simply order and buy oysters to take home.  If you have ever taken a carrot from the garden and eaten it, you can apprecatire how different they taste compared to the grocery store version.  These oysters are the same experience.   Amazingly fresh and clean and TASTY.
      3. If you have a craftsman, a tinkerer, the person who likes to build and create, please check out the https://www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com Its pretty amazing either way, but if you can get a docent to show you around, they definitely add a lot of interesting background to the displays.
      4. Same category as above, the Antique steam engine Museum. Also exhibits on blacksmithing and spinning rooms.  Check out the information on their website. https://www.agsem.com/
      5. The Gemological institute of America (GIA) is a college for gem cutters and appraisers. They have an interesting tour by appointment https://www.gia.edu/gia-museum , in a lovely building with a small museum. Just call the number on the website and set up an appointment. A docent will meet you and give a brief tour. It’s short, different and interesting.
      6. Across the street from the GIA is the Museum of Making Music. https://www.museumofmakingmusic.org that is great as well. Particularly if you have any family with a high interest in music.
      7. The https://www.aguahedionda.org/discovery-center is local and interesting. They have an exhibit with Mastodon Bones!  Also a nature walk through a variety of animal habitats, very close to the home.  Check the website for guided tours, events and hours.
      8. The Scripps Aquarium is a super fun small venue with some fantastic exhibits. https://aquarium.ucsd.edu/
      9. Torrey Pines Glider Port. The website is about an adventure to paraglide.  However its worth a visit regardless.  Just to sit and watch the activity is pretty fun, and it works really well in conjunction with a visit to the aquarium.  If you are inclined the paragliding is very worthwhile too.  Its money well spent.  In my opinion not scary at all.  You take off, and you will be impressed with how quiet and tranquil the whole flight is.  https://www.flytorrey.com/
      10. Del Mar fairgrounds. This is the home of so many events.  Some of them are staples, like the SD County fair, in the first part of the summer.  Typical fair food, 4H attractions, exhibits, rides.  They also book some fantastic talent for music and other entertainment.  After July 4th is the Horse racing season.  For some, an afternoon at the Del Mar racetrack is a fun afternoon, an atypical entertainment venue.  All year they book a variety of shows, exhibits, attractions.  Check out the calendar and see if there is an interesting activity. http://www.delmarfairgrounds.com/index.php?fuseaction=calendar.home
      11. Encinitas Self Realization Center “Swamis” http://encinitastemple.org/ A lovely complex and gardens at times open to the Public.
